Picture a creek crossing at mile nine. You crouch down, dunk a soft flask, screw on the cap and drink. No tubes, no plunger, no second bag. That's the whole idea behind the Katadyn BeFree, and it's why it shows up so often on the shoulder straps of fast hikers and trail runners.

Tier: mid-range.

How it works

The BeFree pairs a collapsible soft flask with a 0.1-micron hollow-fiber cartridge built into the cap. Katadyn rates the flow at up to 2 liters per minute and the cartridge at up to 1,000 liters, depending on water quality. Cleaning is the clever part: you shake or swish the cartridge in water instead of backflushing.

The trade-offs

That 1,000-liter life is much shorter than Sawyer's ratings, so long-distance hikers should budget for a replacement cartridge. The flask is light but softer than a hard bottle, and some reviewers report the flask wearing out before the filter. Like other hollow-fiber filters, it doesn't handle viruses and must be protected from freezing.

Good match for…

Day hikers, runners and weekend backpackers who refill often and want the simplest possible routine. If you need to filter big batches at camp, a gravity setup like the LifeStraw Peak Gravity is more relaxing.
