Building a backpacking kit from scratch is a lot of tabs. So we did the sorting for you: three complete kits, each covering the same core slots — shelter, sleep, pack, cooking (stove + pot), water, light, and poles/extras. Every pick is backpacking gear you'd carry on your back, not car-camping gear that only works next to the trunk.

All prices are approximate — check the live price on Amazon. Prices drift daily, and sizes/colors can change the number.

Which kit is right for you?

Beginner / Budget Kit — for your first few trips

Best for beginners. You're new to backpacking, you want gear that works without fuss, and you'd rather not spend premium money before you know you love it. Durable, forgiving, and the lowest total of the three. Estimated total: ~$655 (approx., as of Oct 2026).

Mid-Range Kit — for regular weekenders

You've done a few overnights and you're ready for a roomier tent, a warmer, more comfortable pad, and a pack that carries heavier loads well. Estimated total: ~$1,460 (approx., as of Oct 2026).

Premium / Ultralight Kit — for miles-focused hikers

You care about every ounce, you're comfortable with a smaller pack and a trekking-pole-friendly tent, and you'll put in the miles to justify it. Estimated total: ~$1,660 (approx., as of Oct 2026).

A few honest notes

Happy trails — and pack light enough to enjoy the view.
