This kit is built for beginners. If you're heading out on your first (or second, or third) backpacking overnight, this is the setup we'd hand a friend: affordable, durable, and forgiving when you're still learning to pitch a tent in the dark. It's all real backpacking gear — nothing here needs a car parked nearby.

All prices are approximate — check the live price on Amazon. Prices drift daily, and sizes/colors can change the number.

Why each piece made the cut

Shelter — Naturehike Cloud-Up 1. A freestanding one-person backpacking tent (about 3.7 lb, footprint included) at a true budget price. Freestanding means it stands up on its own, which is a huge help while you're learning. Hiking with a partner? The Cloud Up 2 from our other kits is the two-person step up.

Sleep — Kelty Cosmic 20 + Z Lite Sol. This is the one place the budget kit spends a little more, because a warm bag is what makes a first night out comfortable. The Cosmic 20 is a warm, packable down bag for three-season trips. The Z Lite Sol foam pad can't pop, needs no inflating, and doubles as a sit pad at lunch. Simple wins on your first trips.

Pack — Amazon Basics Internal Frame 75L. A real internal-frame backpacking pack with a hip belt, sleeping-bag compartment, and built-in rain cover for under $100. It's heavy (about 5 lb) and reviewers say the straps can loosen under big loads, so keep your load modest and retighten at breaks. When you're ready to upgrade, the Osprey packs in our other kits are the next step.

Cooking — BRS-3000T + TOAKS 750. The BRS is about as cheap and light as a canister stove gets; it boils water for freeze-dried dinners just fine (it's touchy in wind, so use a rock or your body as a windbreak). The TOAKS 750 pot holds the stove and a small fuel canister inside. Fuel is its own line item: the Snow Peak GigaPower 250 (hazmat, non-returnable on Amazon; often easier to grab locally).

Water — Sawyer Mini. Tiny, inexpensive, and trusted. Screw it onto a bottle or squeeze pouch and drink.

Light — Nitecore NU25. Rechargeable, feather-light, and bright enough for night trail miles. It's already a bargain.

Poles — Cascade Mountain Tech 3K Carbon. Carbon shafts and cork grips at a budget price. They're not ultralight (roughly 8 oz per pole) and they pack long, but they save your knees on descents for a fraction of name-brand prices. Poles are also the easiest thing to add later.

Extras — AMK Ultralight/Watertight .5. A compact, waterproof first-aid kit sized for a weekend.
