Why each piece made the cut
Shelter — MSR Hubba Hubba LT 2. A freestanding backpacking tent from a brand with a long track record. Lighter than the budget pick, with better materials and easy setup.
Sleep — Kelty Cosmic 20 + NEMO Tensor All-Season. We kept the Cosmic 20 because it's a genuinely good three-season bag at a fair price. The upgrade is the pad: the Tensor All-Season (R-5.4, about 14 oz) is warm, quiet, and much more comfortable than foam.
Pack — Osprey Atmos AG 65. The famous Anti-Gravity suspended mesh back keeps you cooler and carries weight beautifully. Check the size (S/M vs L/XL) before you buy; women can look at the Aura AG 65.
Cooking — MSR PocketRocket 2 + TOAKS 750. The PocketRocket 2 is the reliable, fast-boiling classic. Paired with the TOAKS 750, it's a clean solo kitchen. Fuel is its own line item: the Snow Peak GigaPower 250 (hazmat, non-returnable on Amazon; often easier to grab locally).
Water — Sawyer Mini. Same pick as every kit: it's the best value filter we know.
Light — Nitecore NU25. Same reasoning — no reason to spend more.
Poles — Black Diamond Trail Cork. Comfortable cork grips and secure FlickLock adjustment.
Extras — MSR Groundhog stakes + AMK first aid. Groundhogs hold far better than the thin stakes most tents ship with, and the AMK kit covers weekend first aid.
