Tier: budget and beginner-friendly. It also makes an excellent backup filter.
The original LifeStraw was a drink-from-the-puddle novelty. The Peak Series version is a more serious tool. LifeStraw redesigned the membrane to resist clogging from sand and silt, and the bottom cap now unscrews, so the straw can thread onto a water bottle or a standard gravity hose.
What LifeStraw claims for it:
- Removes 99.999999% of bacteria, 99.999% of parasites such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, and 99.999% of microplastics
- Flow up to 2.5 L per minute
- Membrane life up to 1,000 gallons (4,000 L)
- Weighs about 0.1 kg (3.5 oz) according to the Amazon listing, in leak-resistant, drop-tolerant housing
Where it makes sense. Use it as the backup in a first-aid kit or day pack, as a starter filter for a kid's first overnight, or as an emergency option in a hip-belt pocket. With the threaded cap, it can do more than a plain straw.
Where it doesn't. Drinking straight from the source means you can't easily carry treated water for cooking or for the next dry stretch. For main-filter duty on multi-day trips, most people will be happier with something that fills bottles, like the Sawyer Squeeze or LifeStraw's own Peak Gravity system. It doesn't remove viruses.
A sensible way to use it: carry it as a cheap, light backup to your main filter, because a cracked or frozen filter is a common way trips go wrong.
