Pack fabrics shed light rain, but seams and zippers eventually let water in during steady rain. A rain cover is the quickest fix.
Tier: budget.
Specs (Osprey)
- Medium size for 30–50 L packs
- Taped seams
- A drawcord cinch to snug it over the pack
- Packs into its own case
Covers vs. liners
A cover keeps the outside of the pack dry, and the pack fabric doesn't soak up water and get heavy. But wind can catch it, and water still runs down your back panel. A liner like the Osprey Ultralight Pack Liner or Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Pack Liner keeps the contents dry no matter what. Many hikers in wet climates use both.
Sizing
Choose by your pack's volume. Packs like the Osprey Rook 50 and Kelty Redwing 50 fit the Medium. Larger packs need the Large.
