Tier: budget. A beginner pick, with one big caveat.

TETON's mummy bag is one of the most common budget sleeping bags on Amazon, and the listing pitches it at backpackers. It has a three-piece hood that cinches around your face, extra insulation in the footbox for cold feet, a full-length zipper draft tube, hang loops for storage and a compression sack.

The caveat is weight. Amazon lists it at about 3.8 lb. That's more than double many mid-range down bags and roughly triple a premium quilt. It also packs much bigger, even compressed. For a first overnight or two that's fine, but you'll feel it on long climbs.

Make sure you pick the right variant. The listing includes 20°F and 5°F versions. For three-season backpacking, the 20°F is the usual choice. As with any bag, treat the number as a survival or lower limit rather than a comfortable night's sleep. Budget bags especially tend to be rated optimistically.

Who it suits:

When you're ready to upgrade, a synthetic bag like the NEMO Forte or a down bag like the NEMO Disco cuts weight and bulk dramatically.
