Tier: premium. A pad for winter and shoulder season.
If you've ever lain awake at 3 a.m. feeling the frozen ground pull heat out of your hips, you know the problem the XTherm was built to solve.
The headline number is an R-value of 7.3. For reference, many three-season pads sit around 2 to 4.5. With 7.3 you can sleep on snow, and you have spare warmth in cold desert nights and early-season alpine camps.
Other specs from Therm-a-Rest, size Regular:
- 15.5 oz (440 g), only a couple of ounces more than the XLite NXT
- 3 inches thick, 20 x 72 inches
- 70D ripstop nylon bottom for better puncture resistance
- A WingLock valve designed to work in freezing conditions
- Packs to about the size of a 1-liter bottle, with a pump sack, stuff sack and patch kit included
Is it overkill for summer? For many people, yes. You'll pay more and carry extra weight you don't need in July. But if you only want one pad for every season, a warm pad is easier to live with than a cold one, because you can always vent your sleeping bag or quilt.
The trade-offs: it's among the most expensive pads in this category, and the crinkly sound bothers light sleepers. Amazon stock looked limited when we checked.
Budget route to similar warmth: stack a closed-cell foam pad like the RidgeRest Classic under a three-season inflatable. R-values roughly add up, and the foam protects the air pad.
