Tier: budget.
Spend a few nights eating freeze-dried meals and you'll find the problem: a normal spoon can't reach the bottom of the pouch without your knuckles going into the food. A long-handled spoon solves it, and it's become one of the most common small upgrades in backpacking.
The TOAKS version is about as simple as it gets:
- Material: uncoated titanium
- Weight: about 0.65 oz (19 g)
- Length: 8.5 in (215 mm)
Why titanium? It won't bend like cheap aluminum, won't melt on a hot pot like plastic, and won't add a metallic taste. It also lasts for years.
Why a spoon, not a spork? Spork tines often catch on pouch corners and can tear thin bags, and many people find a plain spoon scoops better. That's a matter of taste, though. If you want tines, look at the Sea to Summit Frontier long spork.
One downside: the long handle can be awkward to pack in small cook kits. Check that it fits diagonally in your pot, or carry it in a side pocket.
